WIPpet Wednesday 2017

Welcome back!!

As you may have seen in my post last week, I’ve made the decision to change my pseudonym. My old one wasn’t cutting it for me and was in no way a stand out moniker. The long and short of it is that from now on, I’ll be going by the name Ríona O’Inabha in official business and Rin in the day to day 🙂

Now, onto the WIPpet! (Hosted by the talented  Emily Witt

This excerpt is from The Sacred Flame, Scene 18. It is quite in it’s rawest form and I experimented in the scene with a slightly different voice so I’d be interested in any feedback you may have. 🙂

After lunch, a rich affair of pie (untouched) and wine (consumed), Maisha dragged her feet up the stairs to Regent Daviz’s office. The door stood open in anticipation and Maisha, wanting to disappoint, idled around the corner until she heard a chair scrape back and Daviz’s face poked out the doorway. He exchanged a few quiet words with the guards on duty and retreated back into his office. She waited a few minutes longer before sauntering down the hall and into the regent’s office.

He looked up, his pursed lips forced into a smile as she took a seat in front of the desk.

“Deshral’s blessings, lady,” he greeted her in a steady, diplomatic tone – friendly yet withdrawn. He rose to his feet rounding the desk. Perching on the edge of the wooden top, he passed her a piece of parchment filled with tiny black squiggles, heavy with the weight of two large wax seals.

“What do you make of this?” he asked.

That’s it for this week! 🙂 If you’d like to join in or check out the other participants, follow this link.

Ooh, intriguing. I really like the first line with the little asides in parentheses.

The only thing I picked up on was that the last two sentencse of the first paragraph both end with the word “office” which sounds a bit clunky and repetitive.

I’m also a fan of the asides, and Maisha’s attitude – wanting to disappoint. It speaks of layers of tension we don’t know yet.

And, much as I’m curious about the squiggles of ink, it’s the wax seals I want to know more about. Like, do they smell fresh, or old? Like beeswax, or tallow? What color are they? How big, how thick, how well imprinted…

I kind of have a thing for wax seals….could you tell? =D

By the way, LOVE the new name! It’s like music!
