Today we have a little scene from Arrowsong in Anjez’s POV. Anjez had no POV scenes for quite a few drafts so its been fun to actually get inside his head.

Context: A little later in this scene 🙂

The princess looked out beyond the city, north, to the mountains framing the horizon and the rest of Fariel beyond. There was the same look in her eyes he felt in his when he stood at the tiller of his ship, looking out at a boundless sea. ‘What I’m about to tell you cannot leave the embassy,’ she murmured, turning to face him. She dropped her voice even lower, though there was no one else around to hear. ‘The Haeleans are gathering a force just beyond Fariel’s northern border. Once spring comes, they will invade.’

Anjez cleared his throat, breaking his gaze from hers. ‘And what does that have to do with me?’ Haelea shared no borders with Bashraan – at least, none that didn’t require the empire to march its army for weeks through desert anyway. Or Fariel. And all of Bashraan’s trade links lay east or south. His country had turned its back on Fariel long, long ago.

‘Fariel cannot fight this invasion alone,’ Princess Karavere replied, a bitter edge to her voice. ‘We need allies.’

‘If it’s an alliance you’re looking for, speak with the ambassador.’ What could he offer that Ambassador Safir could not?

‘You’re a prince of-’

Anjez grit his teeth. ‘A captain.’

The princess’s eyes narrowed to a glare, a stubborn set to her jaw. ‘Regardless, captain, you are the son of the king of Bashraan. That must grant you a level of access, of influence, that the ambassador simply does not have.’

Anjez scoffed. ‘My father has many sons.’

That’s all for today. I’m looking forward to checking out all your WIPpet Wednesday posts! 🙂

I like being in Anjez’s head. His POV of the whole siutation adds a whole new level of detail and intrigue.
